The Board - Phil Goodwin, Chairman

Who we are
Phil Goodwin, Chairman

Phil Goodwin is Executive Chairman of Fusion Investments Ltd. He is responsible for the overall direction and strategy of the business, for investor relations, and investment decision-making. He has a lifelong career in private equity investment, predominantly in the UK, but also in other parts of Europe, Japan, and Africa. His investment experience is mainly in middle-market private equity. His early and formative career was spent at 3i, the leading private equity institution in the UK at the time (www.3i.com), where he was lucky enough to work under people like Brian Larcombe (who became Chief Executive) and Derek Sach (who became Head of Specialized Lending at RBS). From there, in the mid-1990s, he moved to HSBC Private Equity, and co-led the management buy-out in 2002, when HSBC Private Equity became Montagu Private Equity (www.montagu.com). Montagu managed funds in excess of €2 billion, and for 10 years produced consistent 35%+ IRRs for its investors, working in the market for medium-sized management buy-outs. Phil led the UK business – about half of the activity – and was responsible for investment strategy and execution, portfolio management, as well as marketing and recruitment. He was again fortunate in the people he worked with, recruiting as team heads Jason Gatenby (now CEO of Montagu), Simon Pooler (now Director, Montagu), and James Roddis 'Head of UK Minority Partners at ICG'. He worked closely with Nigel Hammond (now founder and joint MD of Vespa Capital Partners) who ran the other half of the business, and Chris Masterson who was Chief Executive and dealt with investor relations.

At the beginning of 2006, he left Montagu and sold his stake in the business. He bought into Fusion Investments Ltd, a dormant company at the time, and began to look for opportunities, at the same time pursuing other academic and charitable interests.

Besides Fusion, Phil is an active investor in a number of other private equity funds. He is a co-founder of the charity KIN (www.kiberainneed.org). He is a graduate of Oxford University, where he achieved a first in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, and of Manchester University, where he completed his PhD.
